Truth in Proverbs

So far I’ve written about three sections of the Bible: Myths, Histories, and Rules & Regulations. [Note: this is my own breakdown it is neither particularly rigorous nor particularly original.] Proverbs, Psalms, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon are examples of what I think of as kind of like poetry. The directive parts are more like bits of wisdom than requirements. The history parts are clearly intended to convey an emotion or spirit of an event. These parts of the Bible are enjoyable to read and are often the location of someones favorite scripture. For example, Psalm 23, Psalm 101, For everything there is a season . . ., some sexy bits, etc.

God’s Politics’ blog has started posted a scripture of the day. Today’s scripture is from Proverbs: Those who are generous are blessed, for they share their bread with the poor.

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to share bread with the poor. Chalice Christian and our mother church, Tempe Community Christian Church, served the homeless in Mesa, AZ at Paz de Cristo. Some colleagues joined me as well.

I don’t have much of an intellectual point to make here. I just wanted to note how wonderful it was to do good for someone in such a concrete way. It was definitely a blessing.
